Money — Dollar Sign, Figures, and Even Amounts

Rulebase Summary
When writing an even dollar amount, use the dollar sign and the figure but omit the decimal point and ciphers ($50, not $50.00). When figures appear in succession and the speaker repeats the word 'dollar' for each, repeat the dollar sign before each figure.
Examples
A. I paid $50.00 for the part.
A. I paid $50 for the part.
Omit the decimal point and ciphers for even dollar amounts.
A. He offered $500 or 600 dollars for it.
A. He offered $500 or $600 for it.
When the speaker repeats 'dollar' for each amount, repeat the dollar sign before each figure.
Transcript Notes
If the speaker does not use the word 'dollar' for each number, write the word 'dollars' at the end where it appears in the stenographic notes. Keep the record as verbatim as possible — do not add symbols or words not spoken. Reporters and scopists must work together to decide what works best when speakers use untraditional or incomplete numerical expressions.
